I always wanted to do fanart, especially a hand-painted mixed-media fanart. After some thoughts and consideration, I decided to do Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Rei Ayanami is selected for this piece as she is one of my favorite character in the show and she is also very famous among the fans. If you haven’t seen it, you should.

Instead of the original anime style, I decided to draw her using my own style. An actual size sketch was drawn. The size I used for this piece is A2 size. Pencil on Layout paper.

I found out that the sketch is little too big for my drawing paper. Need to leave some border on the side. so, I photocopied it and reduce the size to 90%, and then, traced the outline on my prepared gesso A2 size drawing paper.

I stick some bandages on the paper to create some texture on it.

Notice the bottom left of the photograph and the bandages on Rei’s head? that’s bandage.

Then, started color it using liquid acrylic.

Then, I colored the bird.

…and the building as back ground.

The bottom part of the building is not drawn because I wanted to do ‘fade away’ effect.

After the initiate outline, simple shadows and shapes are formed.

I started to ‘dye’ the entire image.

This is the first layer of the ‘dyeing’ process.Tube acrylic colors are used. Acrylic colors are permanent when dried. So, I am not afraid that the wet colors will dirty my artwork later.

Not really satisfied on the 1st layer of dyeing. So, I did a second layer and added in more orange yellow to it.
